The end of No Shame Tour now we’re Following our Bliss but this Volcano is throwing down some gauntlets….

Hi Folks,

The No Shame Tour officially ended when Alli ran the Athens, Ohio marathon on April 11, 2010. She did it in 3 hrs 57 minutes and 21 seconds—coming in 2nd in her age group and 64th overall. We raised $1102 in the USA and $764 in Canada from 10 % of our merch proceeds ---special thanks to all of you who also generously donated directly to the National Children’s Alliance and Little Warriors. Special thanks also to JT and the Clouds and to Allis’s family David Russell, Tessa, Nicki, and Keino George who got her through the race!

We’re all packed and ready to go and waiting to fly from Chicago to Amsterdam—our flight today was cancelled due to the volcanic activity in Iceland and the ensuing international air space mayhem…. So we’re waiting in a very long queue!! We are looking at every option trying to get to the Netherlands in time for our first four shows—as it stands we’ve been able to buy another flight that will get most of the band to Amsterdam by April 27th ( which means we’d miss the first four shows but better than the option British Airways presented us with which would mean we wouldn’t arrive until April 30th!! )—we’re still looking for anything earlier... If any of you reading this have special pull with the airlines and are feeling generous towards a hard working Canadian Urban Roots band please let us know!

We’ll get there one way or another. We are looking forward to being back in Europe - ash and all!
Looking forward to seeing your lovely faces out at the shows

xxo

Europe / UK here we come!

Hey there everyone,

All the finishing touches are coming together now for our up coming Spring 2010 Europe/UK Tour. We are so excited to be heading out to these places again with our new release "Follow Your Bliss".

Starting April 23rd will be touring the Netherlands, Germany, the UK and Ireland for seven weeks. Joining us will be our dear friend JT Nero, whom some of you know from Chicago's finest "JT and the Clouds"...out on the road in support of their latest release "Calendonia".(it's amazing)

It has been a wonderful time putting our songs together getting ready for this tour and we can't wait to play them on that side of the Atlantic.

In The Netherlands we will be appearing on two National T.V. shows and in the UK we will be on the Loose Ends radio show, on BBC with Bob Harris, radio Solent and as well as a live performance with BBC Lancashire Radio Theatre. We're also doing a radio show in Dublin.  We LOVE the BBC and look forward to playing on air, so please do check out our website for details and show dates. (details will be up soon for the radio shows!)

Take care as always and hope to see you soon,

Love

Thanks!

We just wanted to send out a big thank you to all of you who donated to our fundraiser for the National Children's Alliance and Little Warriors. We donated over $1800 from merch sales and direct donations alone. We appreciate all your support for us, for Alli and for ending child abuse. We are so proud of Alli for being strong enough to tell her story of survival and sing her song every night during the tour. Incredible courage.

Alli's song No Shame is still on our homepage for free down load - so feel free to share it with anyone.  Alli is running her second marathon on April 11th - you can make donations in her name directly to the NCA or Little Warriors.

Our spring No Shame Tour was outstanding- covered a lot of ground. We were so lucky to not hit any of the freak weather that was happening all over the country. We squeezed JT Nero into the van for the last month, which was well worth it, despite the cramped conditions. His songs and energy were wonderful editions to the tour.

Heading to the UK and Netherlands in two weeks!  More soon...

Love,

Alli, Awna, Benny, Mikey and Maggie

Half Way Through the No Shame Tour…Our Faith in Humanity Grows Daily!

The Ann Arbor Folk Fest set the bar high right at the beginning of this tour ---we will never forget getting to share the stage with Richie Havens, Roseanne Cash, Patty Larkin, Hoots and Hellmouth, and the Hot Club of Cow Town during the finale—all around wonderful! We got to see Iron and Wine for the first time— mind blowing… Then a reunion with our beloved JT and the Clouds at the SPACE in Evanston—such a great venue, and a fantastic night. It was Mikey’s baby niece, Lily’s first show! Paul and the Musical Merry Go Round at KDHX made us feel so welcome our first time to St. Louis - we’ll definitely be getting back there soon!

Our life on the road would be a cold, hard place indeed if it weren’t for our surrogate families and dear road friends who make us feel so welcome all over North America. Huge thanks and much love to Matt and Judy in Lawrence, KS, Marjorie and Barry Miller in OK City, Mark and Deborah in Norman, OK, Billy and Dodee and all the wonderful folks at Blue Rock Studio, in Wimberley, TX. We had so much fun playing and we’re excited for the upcoming DVD!

Memphis we had a great time for the 5 brief hours at Folk Alliance. Knoxville, you were worth the all night drive...we had a “band nap time” after the radio show. We love WDVX! Special thanks to Matt Morelock and Morelock Guitars for the deal on Alli’s first electric guitar! Niki and Jim - you made Atlanta feel like home!

And then New York, New York and the second reunion with JT & the Clouds---what a great, great city and lovely, lovely people! JT Nero of JT and the Clouds is with us for the rest of the No Shame Tour dates. We’re all having a blast working out more of each other’s songs and presenting new arrangements to you beautiful listeners every night. We are so very lucky! Maine was extra special with tons of Benny and Maggie’s childhood friends and family coming out in style. We love you Ellises and Sidelingers! Pittsburg, we feel you like never before thanks to Matt and Jane—we love you guys! We can’t thank you enough for the superlative hospitality.

It’s been an honour and a privilege to have representatives from the many child protection agencies affiliated with the National Children’s Alliance and Little Warriors come out to some of our shows and give us all more information about the ways that we can help to prevent child abuse in our communities. Thanks to our amazing audiences for supporting this cause and for supporting Alli in her upcoming marathon run, in Athens, Ohio on April 11th. April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month in the USA and we’re all excited to be making this tangible contribution. Alli is training hard everyday despite the cold weather and our crazy tour schedule.

We’re back home in Canada now (but still on tour). Alli’s new found paternal family, the Georges, are spoiling us all with the best Grenadian style cooking ever and with great company! We’ll be playing shows in Canada until March 22nd — we’re looking forward to saying hello to some of you at the shows.

See you in the funnies!

Love,

Po’ Girl

Po'Girl on the "No Shame Tour" to Help Prevent Child Abuse

It's a new decade and Canadian Urban Roots band, Po'Girl is getting proactive!   Alli Russell, Awna Teixeira, Benny Sidelinger, and Mikey "Lightning" August are taking the new show on the road in the USA and Canada throughout February and March for the "No Shame Tour".

Po' Girl will be raising money to benefit the National Children's Alliance  ( http://www.nationalchildrensalliance.org) in the USA and Little Warriors (http://www.littlewarriors.ca) in Canada.  Partial proceeds of all Po'Girl merchandise sales from their shows will be donated to these groups.  Allison Russell of Po'Girl will also be fund raising by collecting donations in support of her running the Athens, Ohio marathon on April 11, 2010 at the conclusion of the "No Shame Tour". One hundred percent of these donations will go to benefit the two child abuse prevention organizations. It's all a part of following their bliss....

Russell is the survivor of ten years of sexual abuse at the hands of her adopted father.  She wrote the song "No Shame" in 2006 when she found out that he had been released from prison. Po'Girl recorded "No Shame" on their critically acclaimed album Deer in the Night  in 2009. "No Shame" was featured on the radio program The Vinyl Cafe in May 2009. Host Stuart Mclean wrote a beautiful piece about the song and Alli's history; the reception from listeners was overwhelming.

Says Russell,  "Stuart's piece and the response to it, gave me the idea that perhaps I could be more actively using my past misfortune and our music to increase awareness and dialogue about the endemic issue of child abuse in North America. Whatever I can do to prevent what happened to me from happening to others, that's what I have to do. It's my responsibility as a survivor. Not everyone is so lucky."

Hailing originally from Canada, Po’Girl weave a blend of musical influences, sweetness, grit & soul into their fresh and original sound. Since the band's birth in Vancouver, BC in 2003 they've been winning devoted and growing numbers of fans across 4 continents and 13 countries with their powerful, passionate and spirited live show. The interplay between Alli, Awna, Benny, and Mikey "Lightning" is truly something to behold. They are distinct voices with incredible harmonies; multiple instrumentalists who bring the perfect sound to each song and songwriters who pen poetic tunes you'll find yourself humming. They'll be heading to Europe for a two month tour of the Netherlands, the UK, and Ireland after the "No Shame Tour".  Catch them while you can!

Their latest release, Deer in the Night still includes many of the trappings of the trademark Po' Girl sound - the echoes of speakeasy jazz, the western lament, the accordion-strapped ghosts of European folk - but it's all delivered with a soulful clarity and depth only hinted at on previous records. They have also recently released a live album, Po' Girl Live that captures the energy and spirit of the live show, complete with special guests JT and the Clouds.

Po'Girl is spending January recording new album "Follow Your Bliss" in Chicago, IL. "Follow Your Bliss" will be released in Europe in May and in North America in June.

“Their uplifting take on American Folk music, combining it with Jazz, roots and a little bit of pretty much everything else, has the ability to put a smile on anyone’s face.” – Glasgow Americana Festival

"With enough sultry ambiance to be at home in either cocktail lounge or New Orleans street corner,  Po' Girl's sentiment never feels forced, the lyricism never cliche or false. They manage to maintain that traditional and nostalgic sound while the breathing fresh life into an old-fashioned genre."- Rolling Stone Magazine

"Po' Girl is rough and smooth, sweet and tart, and would be huge stars in that super-cool alternate universe I've always wanted to live in." -          John Schlotfelt, Little Village Magazine

Rather Odd Journey

In November we played a show in a little town called Duncan in BC. We met some lovely folks who were on a trip documenting "couch surfing" and making a video about it for a school project. They came to the Po' Girl show because their hosts were already planning on coming to see us. Here is a link to the short video that they put together - Po' Girl has a cameo!

http://ratheroddjourney.ca/index.php?page=couch-surfing-from-pacific-to-the-atlantic

The guy, Kelvin, is contining on a bigger journey from Antartica to the Arctic  --  you can see what he is up to on that site. Pretty cool!

We are now selling hand-made pre orders of the upcoming album: "Follow Your Bliss"!

We have a bunch of new songs that we've been playing live at shows and we're so excited to get them recorded and out to our fans! These special edition copies will be hand printed (by the band) on an attractive cardboard case, signed and numbered. They will only be available until Jan 15th, and will not be manufactured in this way again. This is an excellent gift idea for the holidays. With that in mind, in mid December we are going to send a hand printed card acknowledging the order to all shipping addresses. We will be recording the album in January at a wonderful little studio in Chicago, and plan to ship the pre sale copies in early April.

We greatly appreciate you helping us keep our independance, and hope that you will enjoy getting a very limited edition item that is only available during this presale period. Due to major changes in the industry, many musicians are moving toward independant produciton of their albums. This can offer great advantages to artists in the long term, but it requires raising the production costs in advance.

The price is $25 USD and includes tax and shipping. You can purchase it online with google checkout or paypal. Please make sure to include a shipping address. Additionally, you can email pogirlmanagement@gmail.com to make arrangements to purchase with a check or money order.

On Seattle BikeWorks, Lisa, Rory, Torin, Frank Busting, and Child Life

We’ve been having the most incredible tour. We want to send out a huge thanks to all of you who’ve been coming to the shows and spreading the word, for being part of our community and for letting us be part of yours.

This last trip to Seattle has really reminded us of the importance and beauty of community—and reminded us of how grateful we are to be included even if we’re only physically present a couple of times a year….Our Seattle based friends Bill and Micki Lippe have become almost surrogate parents to our band over the last  two and half years. Bill is a great supporter of live music in Seattle and runs a fantastic house concert series. He is also deeply involved with an organization called Bike Works, www.bikeworks.org, —which is helping to build sustainable communities by educating inner-city and at risk youth and promoting bicycling as a clean and healthy transportation alternative. Bill arranged for us to play a benefit for Bike Works in 2008 and we just did another this Nov. 13th past. We are planning to make the Seattle Bike Works benefit a yearly event from now on, and a big thanks to the Bike Works kids for our new van ornament made entirely of bike parts! We've named him Richard and he and Chester are now best friends!

Bill and Micki are the kind of people who just quietly and without fuss go about making life better for everyone around them –they are truly connecters.  We first met Lisa, and her two incredible sons, Rory and Torin at a house concert that Bill put on for Awna, our friend JT Nero from JT and the Clouds, and I in 2008. The three of us remember being struck by the family –how loving they were, and how mature, and assured, and wise beyond their years the two boys were. Lisa was planning on bringing both the boys out to the benefit on Nov 13th—but as the day got closer it became clear that Torin wasn’t going to be physically up to attending. Torin is seven years old and he’s in the midst of a battle with a brain tumor that he’s named Frank. Bill arranged for us to go over to Torin’s house before the benefit and put on a concert for him in his bedroom since he couldn’t come to us. We had a wonderful time and feel honored to be a part of Torin’s network of support. His mum Lisa and big brother Rory, and their whole loving extended community are doing everything they can to help and strengthen Torin throughout this battle. Torin’s split 2 and 3rd grade class have been hand making Frank Buster badges –tangible symbols of the commitment to blast Frank out of Torin’s head and right out of the universe. The Frank Buster badge stands for hope, community, and taking action when we see someone dealing with a difficult situation.  Torin wants all proceeds of the sale of the Frank Buster badges to go to the Child Life Department-- go to www.seattlechildrens.org/clinics-programs/child-life/  for more information—which helps to provide a positive hospital experience for children and teens.  Our way of taking action is to sing for Torin and his full recovery every time we’re on stage. We now have a mascot—a little stuffy owl named Oscar who’s always with us and is going to wear a Frank Buster badge until Torin is in full remission!  I hope all of you will be “Frank Busters” in your communities too in whatever ways you can…

Ways you can be a Frank Buster:

Wear a Frank Buster Badge

Support Child Life ( or a similar organization in your community) to help kids who are really sick

Wash hands, cover coughs, and stay home if you get sick

Remember to include kids who are really sick in your everyday activities. Don’t assume they want to be treated differently

Make a hat for a kid who’s lost their hair

If you know someone who’s really sick, write a letter or draw a picture to remind them that you care

Wishing you all happy and healthy community filled holidays, see you out on the road

Love from Alli and Po’Girl

On the Road in Ontario...

We have fallen down in our news relaying and we apologize –it’s been a busy, emotionally charged summer and early fall!

We got back from the UK and hit North America running – we played Live Oak and Kate Wolf Fests in California for the first time — amazing — we met our new best friends Girlyman and plotted our fall foreign exchange tours… We played a few shows in southern Oregon and then we hopped over to Nova Scotia for the Stan Rogers Fest in Canso. 4 days off for the most of the band in Montreal while Alli flew to Toronto to meet her biological father and her paternal family for the first time, and then we all had a grand ole time at the Montreal Jazz Fest — 2 sold out shows! Merci Montreal pour votre generosite!

Late July and early August were mostly about human time away from the band — JJ taught at song school in Colorado, and played at the Folks Fest, Benny built guitars and he and Maggie visited family in Maine, Awna visited her family in Toronto and Victoria, and Alli went to Grenada for the very first time with her new found paternal family.

We reunited with Chester the trusty Lady Chevy in Seattle, Wa on Aug 26th. We had fun in the West Coast sun there, and in Portland—visited Sisters, Oregon for the first time—we love Angelina’s cafe! Then across the country in two and half days—Chester came through with shining colours—we spent a wonderful Labour Day weekend at the Shelter Valley Folk Fest in Grafton, Ontario. We got to visit with the wonderful Luther Wright (thank you Lu for the hula hoop!) and met and re-met some lovely friends, too. Special thanks to Alli’s paternal family for sharing their home and hearts and the best West Indian food in the world!

We met up with our friends Girlyman in London, Ontario yesterday — we had a sweet night at the London Music Club - and tonight we’re at Hugh’s Room in Toronto. This is the Canadian portion of our Po’Girlyman Foreign Exchange tour! Come one come all-we guarantee a good time! Check out our shows page for all the upcoming dates…

Our new Live album is available at our shows and we have new free post cards, too! Po’Girl enviro friendly tote bags coming soon… Hope to see some of you out on the road! We’ll check back in soon.

Love From the Po’Girl Gang

england my england

Hello from the green rolling British Isles….

We have been having an incredible spring tour over here in support of our new album “Deer in the Night"…It’s been two years too long since our last visit—it feels great to be welcomed so warmly and unreservedly! We won’t let such a lapse occur again—we’re all set to come back to the UK this same time next year.
Thanks to the incredible help and support we’ve received from all of you we were able to make this tour happen. Thank you for believing in us. It has not been in vain! We’ve had an amazing response to our live shows and new c.d. We’ll be posting more reviews up shortly….
We started the European leg in the Netherlands at the end of April with our new friends, Netherland booking agents, and label, Sandra and Luciano from Lucky Dice Music. We had fantastic shows there ( the headlines after the Rhythm and Blues Fest in Groningen read “Canada Rocks!” and hailed us as the pick of the festival, and the Mayor offered us a tour of City Hall next time we come!) and we even spent a couple hours busking on our day off in Vondel Park in Amsterdam -causing a bicycle traffic jam rush hour style—kudos to JJ who pulled off her first street session with aplomb on a borrowed cajon! We’ll also be returning to the Netherlands next year for a more extensive tour that will include Belgium and Germany.
We flew from Amsterdam to Belfast on May 7 to make a sold out appearance at the Cathedral Arts Quarter Festival, and then on to the UK on May 9th. We hit the ground running with Awna taking one for the team—driving our big rundown rental van Bertha (left-side stick shift !!) around London in terrible traffic to pick up the drum kit and make it to the first England show in Bridport. We love the Electric Palace!
Bob and Claire from Grapevine, our fabulous new UK booking agency, have introduced us to parts of this country we’ve never seen before like Cornwall and the Scottish Highlands—from Land’s End to Lossiemouth—we’ve made lots of new friends and been stunned by the beauty of this small but mighty island. There have been so many highlights—extra special for us was having our fave songster and brother JT Nero of JT and the Clouds join us for a run of 6 shows from Otley to Leicester and having a couple of days all together in Edinburgh. Another big highlight has been sharing a bunch of shows with the divine Sarah MacDougall-- we all lived in Vancouver for a while but the UK brought us together. Benny and Sarah’s bandmate,Tim Tweedale, got to talk resonator shop and string out! We can hardly believe 5 weeks have passed so quickly. We’re starting to wrap up our time over seas and will be heading back to North America mid June to start our festival season.
We’ll be picking up trusty Chester the Chevy from our beloved friends Rick and Gail Thaler’s place in Albuquerque and driving across the country to California, then on to Oregon, Washington, Nova Scotia, and then ( very exciting for Alli who grew up going to the free Jazz fest shows) off to Montreal to play the Montreal International Jazz Festival! And then we’ll take a very short break at the end of July… Please do check our show dates as we’ll be all around for the summer and back in full swing this fall.
Also, we are very excited to announce that we will be releasing a new live album in a couple of weeks with some of the most requested songs from our back catalogue including a live version of 'Til it’s Gone' performed in Santa Fe, New Mexico with JT and the Clouds. It will be available on cdbaby.com and at our live shows very soon!
Take care and hope you all have been having a wonderful spring.

hello from oklahoma!!!

Hey ya’ll,

We are hanging down here in O.K. city!! Just got to play one of our favourite venues, “The Blue Door” to one of the most loving crowds!! Thank you Greg we love you!!!

Now we are just getting down to business before we storm SXSW.
Thanks to our lovely hosts Marjorie and Barry we have hunkered down and moved in, having lovely family style dinners and BBQ’S!!! It will be a year since we were in Texas recording our new album “Deer In The Night” and we are so excited to come back with pre-release copies and play some really great showcases.(please check our show dates)

We have been spoiled this tour since picking up our incredible new team player, the lovely and talented Miss JJ Jones…. Not only is she killer on the drums, but also drives like a trucker…… We have posted some new videos on our facebook page “Po’Girl on the road” and will have more up soon!!!

We are really looking forward to our tour over seas and hope to see all our friends and fans over there…. Please stay tuned for some upcoming bells and whistles!!!!

Love
Po’Girl
